When someone passes away, their estate needs to be properly valued, legal authority obtained, and obligations met before anything can be distributed. We guide you through this step by step:
Valuation – reviewing all assets and liabilities
Tax reporting – completing and filing inheritance tax returns
Court application – securing the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration
Estate administration – collecting assets, settling debts, and liaising with institutions
Distribution – ensuring everything is shared in line with the will or intestacy law
Probate is the legal authority granted when there is a valid Will, allowing the Executors to deal with assets. Letters of Administration are needed when there is no Will, and a person (usually a close relative) is appointed to administer the estate under intestacy rules.
It depends on how straightforward the estate is. Simple estates with clear wills and few assets may be resolved in about 6–12 months. More complex cases—assets overseas, disputes, unclear wills—can take longer.
Not always. It depends on the value of the estate, what exemptions and reliefs apply (e.g. nil-rate band, spouse/civil partner relief), whether there are gifts, etc. Even if tax is not due, forms still need to be filed properly.
